about

“Two Portraits” is a fantastic selection of works displaying Kristian M. Roberts' ability to capture, sculpt and manipulate sound to create something that could be described as strikingly visual.

Kristian describes his compositions ‘The Tarkine’ and ‘Port Arthur’ as “Sound Portraits”, constructed purely from a diverse array of field recordings gathered on location in Tasmania. The Tarkine, located on the West side of Tasmania is known as the largest Gondwana cool-temperate Rainforest in Australia, a prestine “natural environment” currently under great threat from logging and mining. In the late 19th century, Port Arthur, located on the South East and joined through a slim isthmus, was a former convict settlement used to contain the worst of Australia’s criminals. In 1996, it was the place of a horrific mass shooting.
